In their neighborhood in Guayaquil, most of the adults work as unskilled laborers. The struggle for daily survival often leaves them no room to invest in their own careers or those of their children. Breaking out of this cycle requires a dream and constant encouragement to chase that dream. Karen found both as a young girl through the children's programs of our prevention project in Balerio Estacio. For over ten years, our team supported and encouraged her, being there for her through all the ups and downs. Karen took her chance, enrolled in nursing training and ended up writing such good grades that she received a scholarship. Today, she is part of the next generation of volunteers in those children's programs that changed her own life.
