Milestone in a Child's Life

Peru Street Children

At the Transformation House in Lima, Peru, 14 of our children are currently attending school. From first through eleventh grade, there is at least one child in almost every grade level—all of them attend the same school.

In Peru, there is no universal compulsory education. That is why it is a great privilege for the children here to be able to go to school every day. Many of them do not start school until they come to the Transformation House. This means that some children do not start first grade until they are 8, 9, or even 11 years old.

Belinda has been at the Transformation House since January. She is very happy that, at the age of 9, she is finally allowed to go to school. Before she came to us, she had to work and wasn’t allowed to go to school.
The sign she is holding reads, “My First Day of School”—a major milestone in her life.
